The Foreign University is a State University with a special organization, which develops teaching and research activities aiming at spreading Italian language and culture.
The various activities promoted by Siena Foreign University are addressed to students as well as to teachers. Apart from the traditional Italian language courses for foreigners, offered in a large variety of combinations, Siena Foreign University releases to Italian and foreign students three and five-year university degrees, specialization diplomas, I and II type master degrees and the title of research doctor.
Siena Foreign University, counting on its own consolidated and qualified experience in linguistics and glottodidactics, elaborates a series of activities addressed to Italian and foreign teachers operating in the field of Italian language teaching as a foreign language. In Siena and abroad, the Foreign University organizes training and proficiency courses, training and proficiency courses for teachers who, basing on constantly upgraded programs, illustrate the development of linguistic research and of glottodidactics.

LALERA project is promoted by the Glottodidactics Department coordinated by Andrea Villarini which is part of the Department of Sciences of languages and cultures. To the achievement of the project also collaborate, together with teachers and technical and administrative personnel, dr. Luciana Menna and dr.  Giuseppe Nuccetelli. 

Siena Foreign University tasks in LALERA project are: 

• to analyze linguistic needs of target groups;
• to elaborate, define, and establish the didactic pattern;
• contents coordination and definition and didactic materials achievement;
• to test trainers modules and to experience the didactic pattern prototype;
• to update pattern in the post-experiencing phase;
• to participate in capitalizing and spreading the product.
