Lalera TOI is an acronym which stands for Language Learning by Radio Transfer of Innovation. It is an international project, funded by the European Union’s programme Leonardo Da Vinci, which aims to produce a prototype of radio program for language training.
A quick summary sheet can be found on the official website of the Italian Project Leonardo Da Vinci.
Its first phase called La.Le.Ra. was awarded with the European Label for best project on Transfer of Innovation 2008.
La.Le.Ra. TOI is a path - designed and produced through the cooperation of experts in language training, of experts in e-learning, educators, radio technicians, trainers and focuses on ten broadcasts - which aims to promote the development of language and vocational skills of Romanian workers, particularly in the filed of elderly assistance and care.
The project provides the construction of programs adapted to the context of reference, in Italy, Spain and Romania. In Italy will be broadcast by Radio Popolare - Rome and Novaradio Florence and Mugello. In Spain, will be broadcast by Radio-Ema RTV in Seville and in Romania, from Societatea Română De Radiodifuziune, the national radio.
The idea of using the radio as a training tool sinks its roots in several considerations:
1. the radio is heard by a very diverse audience, not necessarily literate; ultimately there is a growing practice of listening radio stations from countries of origin through satellite;
2. radio can be heard even during working hours, from home, through the cell-phone and while using public and private transportation.
3. the contact created through human voice is stronger and more compelling than the reading of a didactical fact-sheet.
4. the radio is a very accessible technology, it requires little investment from the user, is transportable anywhere.
Hence the idea of a language course to benefit both during working time and during free time, which does not require travel and which does not requires digital literacy. More specifically with regard to the target of family social assistants this course does not require any kind of Italian knowledge (which is what is usually happening with regard to the access to professional training courses).
